I like the learning approach described as Ohno\u2019s chalk circle. Pausing to truly observe the work before proposing a solution\u2026 It looks simple, but is not always easy for a mind working in a hurry.<\/p>\n

The scene below is a loose dramatisation conveying the method\u2019s message. It is not a verbatim record of an event on a particular date or a verified quote from Ohno.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you see?\u201d<\/h2>\n

A young engineer keeps proposing solutions: change the machine, build a new fixture, train the operator\u2026 The trainer first asks them to observe the work for a while.<\/p>\n

The first answer is brief: \u201cThe operator is working, parts arrive and the machine runs.\u201d Further observation reveals details: hands stopping to search for parts, steps taken to reach materials, uneven replenishment and recurring waits.<\/p>\n

Now the question changes. Before asking \u201cWhich solution should we implement?\u201d we can discuss \u201cExactly what is the problem?\u201d<\/p>\n

Before rushing to a solution<\/h2>\n

The lesson I take from this story is not to underestimate observation. A label we give within a few minutes may not explain the whole problem. We need to record what we see, compare different cycles and listen to the person doing the work.<\/p>\n

Observation should help us understand where the work makes things difficult for employees. Afterwards, we can select a small improvement experiment and monitor its outcome.<\/p>\n

To find a good solution, we first need to learn to ask a better question. Sometimes that begins by stopping and looking for a while.<\/p>
